The PSP is the top handheld console on the market and definitely a top gadget for us dads. But once you’ve got one, what games are you going to get?? Well, here is our list of what we consider to be the top ten PSP games on the market. 1. Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories Publisher: Rockstar Developer: Rockstar Leeds Grand Theft Auto on the small screen! The same format as the original GTA III but the formula still holds strong and the conversion to PSP is sweet. Loads of story missions to choose from and a ton of mini games in the huge sprawling environment of Vice City - what more could you want? The helicopters in Vice City are a dream to fly, and multiplayer mode is incredible. Up to six players are able to play a variety of games in adhoc mode. These range from basic death matches to games like “Might of the Hunter”, in which you all race for a Hunter helicopter, the first one to get to chopper tries to gun down the other players, while they try to take the chopper down. In our humble opinion this is definitely the Daddy of all games on the PSP. 2. Burnout Legends Publisher: EA Developer: Criterion Definitely the best racer on the PSP, it’s automotive carnage on the go. Even though it’s an older game, it’s as good now as when it first came out and is way better than its successor Burnout Dominator. Basically you drive like a maniac to fill your boost bar and then charge around taking down your opponents at every opportunity. Various types of races mean that you have to modify your racing style depending on what the goal of the race is. As well as the races, there are also crash events, where you have to hurtle along the road to trying to involve as many cars as possible in one massive multi-car pile up. Great graphics and sound track, with excellent long-lasting game play make this a must for all PSP owners. 3. God of War, Chains of Olympus Publisher: Sony Developer: Ready At Dawn You play as Kratos, a warrior that serves the Gods of Olympus. The Sun has been stolen by one of the great Titans, and it’s your task to retrieve it and rescue the world from eternal darkness. The game plays in a linear fashion with you having to battle your way through a myriad of enemies, level bosses and puzzles. Controls are great and you are able to perform various combo attacks with your selected weapon through simple button combinations. Weapons and magic can be upgraded by collecting little red orbs from chests and through killing enemies. Visually this is as good as it gets on the PSP and is one of the very best games available. 4. Tomb Raider Anniversary Publisher: Eidos Developer: Crystal Dynamics The first outing of Lara croft on the PSP, and she still looks great in the smaller format! There are 8 expansive levels, with puzzle solving and a fair share of gun play from the usual range of guns in Lara’s arsenal. Moody music and great cut scenes add to the weight of the story line, which sees Lara travel all over the world to various exotic locations searching for artefacts. The same format as all of her other games, so anyone that has played any of the others from the Tomb Raider Library will be able to pick this up and start playing it immediately. 5. Ridge Racer Publisher: Namco Bandai Developer: Namco Bandai One of the first games available at the launch of Sony’s PSP; it has stood the test of time. Other than the introduction of nitro, this is classic Ridge Racer game play. Power slide your way around amazing environments, with a kicking soundtrack playing in the background, unlocking faster and faster cars as you progress through the game. It has a great wireless multiplayer where you can play with up to 3 other racers. An oldie, but a goodie!!! 6. LEGO Star Wars II The Original Trilogy Publisher: Lucas Arts Developer: Traveller’s Tales Lego and Star Wars, a strange combination that works really well! You start out in the Cantina at Mos Eisley Space Port, which forms the base for access to all missions. From here you head out into all of the great scenes from the 3 original films and you are able to relive all of the best bits in blocky LEGO action. This is a great lighthearted adventure game that plays on the nostalgia of the original Star Wars films to great effect. A top game that should be in your collection. 7. Chili Con Carnage Publisher: Eidos Developer: Deadline Games The name says it all….you play as “Ram” whose father is killed in the opening scene of the game in a hit and run involving a combine harvester. The rest of the game sees you shooting your way through a host of goons and bosses to get to the person that ordered the hit on your dad. Basically shoot everything that moves using the most ridiculous moves possible. Great graphics and frantic game play make this a top game. 8. Driver 76 Publisher: Ubisoft Developer: Ubisoft 70s retro, over 40 cool period cars and a kicking sound track, what more could you want from a game?? Driver 76 is based in New York 1976, where you drive in street races, complete missions and play a host of mini games to become the top dog. The open world game play is very addictive; however the actual story line is quite short and a little predictable. The game does have a good multiplayer, so you can pit yourself against your friends and extend its play time. 9. Killzone Liberation Publisher: Sony Developer: Guerilla Games Based in a futuristic environment, this 3rd person shooter sees you pitted against the Helghast, a group of humans that have split from the main human race and developed different physical characteristics. This game sees you dropped into the middle of a battle to stop the Helghast invasion on some distant planet or other. You wont be able to put this mission-based shooter down as the game play is addictive with pretty much nonstop shooting action; however it is far from easy, with wave after wave of Helghast invaders to take out, and all of them with their sights set on you.
10. Need For Speed Carbon: Own the City Publisher: EA Developer: EA You and your team of street racers compete against other racing crews in street races to take control of the city. There is a fairly meaty story line that fleshes out as you progress through the game trying to find out who killed your brother, and it also has a decent online gaming facility. The game does have some rather annoying wingmen which race along with you and you can send off to take out your opponent racers. Unfortunately the AI for the wing men does not seem to make any allowance for you and they usually end up getting in the way and causing more harm than good! What can we say racing around in great looking and handling cars that you can customise, what more could you want? |
