We have all worried about cot death and whether the room is the right temperature for our child. Is our baby safe with a duvet or blankets, quilt or sheet. All of thoese worries are very normal. The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) recommends that the safest place for your baby to sleep is in a cot in your room for the first six months. You can keep a close eye on your child. We have all stared at our baby at some stage to hear them breathing or watch their chest rise up and down just to make sure they are ok. Again this is perfectly natural. To assist in your babies general sleep and well being always try and follow these guidelines:- 1.Never sleep with a baby on a sofa or armchair 2.Both mums and dads should cut out smoking during pregnancy 3.No one should be allowed to smoke in the same room as your baby. This goes for being in a car also. 4.Do not let your baby get too hot. 5.Place your baby on its back to sleep. 6.If your baby is unwell seek medical advice promptly. Even if it is nothing better to be safe than sorry!! 7. Keep your babys haed uncovered and always place their feet to the foot of the cot to prevent them wriggling under the covers. 8.Do not share your bed with the baby if either of you smoke, have been drinking, taken medication, your baby was born very small or premature or if you feel very tired. Very tempting indeed when you have been up most of the night and you have work in a couple of hours. |
